It’s a common question; is juicing better than blending and vice versa.
I started blending when coffee and carbs weren’t doing me justice in the morning and wanted to kick start a healthier diet. I chose blending, simply because it was easier - I just couldn’t deal with the thought of cleaning a juicer every morning.
Blending provides water, water-soluble vitamins and minerals, and fiber. With blending, you drink the entire fruits and vegetables you put in the blender; skin, leaves, stems and even seeds. Blending breaks apart the fiber, which allows the fruits and vegetables to digest easily and helps create a slow, even release of nutrients into the blood stream.
Juicing on the other hand separates the water from the pulp and other solid parts of the fruits and vegetables, discarding the fiber so you only consume the water and nutrients. Without the fiber, your digestive system doesn’t have to work as hard to break down the food and absorb the nutrients. So you get a superpower of nutrients but zero fiber.
So the main difference is; you consume fiber when blending and don’t when juicing.
Although our bodies absorb the nutrients better from juicing, our bodies need a healthy daily intake of fiber.
Fiber is the most important element when detoxing as it slows down the release of glucose in the blood stream preventing sugar spikes, lowers cholesterol and supports digestive health by eliminating toxins through the digestive system. Because of the fiber content, blended juices are filling and sustain energy.
Here is my favourite blended juice:
In this juice, cucumber meets fresh mint and sweet pear for a perfectly refreshing blend. There’s spinach in the juice too, along with a touch of lemon.
1/4 lemon, skin cut off
1 handful fresh mint
1 heaping cup spinach
1 teaspoon coconut oil
Run all ingredients through a blender. Serve with fresh lemon or an extra sprig of mint for garnish!
