Meditation fills a need that women crave: time for themselves to rest, recover and catch up with all the thoughts that fly in and out all day (and to sort out her feelings from the confusion of everyone else’s).
Meditation benefits can include: improved memory, greater relaxation, increased emotional balance, and an enhanced sense of self and satisfaction in life.
My first meditation experience was with a downloaded MP3 audio. A quick Google search told me to sit in a quiet space on the floor with my eyes closed and legs crossed. After a few goes at it, I wasn’t enjoying the sitting on the floor thing – and eventually gave up.
The problem for me (and I suspect for many), is that I found sitting and thinking about ‘nothing’ to be really boring. The first few times I tried to meditate I remember sitting fidgeting thinking about how I can’t wait for it to be over so I can go on living my life and doing all the things that I had to do that day. Little did I know at the time the benefits of meditation, and just how sensuous, soulful, and fun it can be!
Fast forward a year or two and somehow the idea of giving meditation another go popped into my head. I was stressed out at work and was looking for something to ‘relieve the pain’. Just by chance I happened to pass a meditation place down the road from my work that had a sign out the front saying ‘meditation benefits EVERYONE’. So in a moment of impulse I walked in took out my credit card, paid my $250 and booked myself into a 6 week meditation course!
I was expecting the course to have lots of rules on breathing and posture and to have to sit on the floor (which personally I find uncomfortable and distracting). But it turned out that the teacher was laid back and we all just sat there on chairs and went through a few meditation exercises that help you to relax – things like visualising happy times from your childhood; or learning to let go of a negative emotion you hold toward someone by visualising love for that person.
My meditation teacher was male but had been involved in the feminist movement in the 1960s and was very much in touch with a woman’s needs. He taught me that most meditation teachings were created long ago, by (and for) men in monasteries with meditation techniques used to remove passion, emotion, and sexuality. The issue of what is healthy and supportive for women was never raised.
My teacher recommended a book called Meditation Secrets for Women: Discovering Your Passion, Pleasure, and Inner Peace. Basically what I learnt from this book was that many women require precisely the opposite approach than the traditional meditation teachings. Women need to learn to use meditation to embrace (not remove) their passion, emotion and sexuality.
From personal experience I would say that when approaching meditation you need to custom-tailor your practice to suit your individual needs and circumstances. Meditation benefits everyone but as a woman you need to find ways to meditate to suit your body, nature, and psyche. For example, women can meditate on things like ‘loving their body’, or overcoming pain during the menstrual cycle.
For me the benefits of meditation are many and endless. Meditation brings me home to myself and what really matters, and it has really helped me learn to relax and let the hussle and bussle of daily life ‘wash over me’ – rather than enter my psyche.
If you’ve felt frustrated with meditation, thought you couldn’t ‘do it right’, you should give it another go. I really do believe meditation benefits EVERYONE and I encourage my girlfriends who have never tried meditating to simply attempt to sit quietly for 5 minutes each day.
As a woman meditating for the first time you will soon learn that meditation benefits more than your anxious mind, it will also help you to open up to the world, and affirm your sense of what it is to be a woman.
The benefits of meditation are many, and it’s as simple as downloading an app on your smart phone or just sitting quietly for 5 minutes.
