Most people believe that commercial sports drinks are the best choice of drink to replenish lost fluids during and after exercise, but that’s just simply not the case. Most sports drinks are filled with toxic artificial flavours and colours, copious amounts of sugar and salt, and endless amounts of chemicals – none of which contribute to optimal health.
Consider this: one bottle of a popular brand of sports drink (such as Gatorade, Powerade or Lucozade) has about 200 calories and contains 50 grams of sugar. 50 grams of sugar is about twice the amount of sugar as any common chocolate bar and the recommended sugar intake for adult women is 20 grams of sugar per day, for adult men it’s 36 grams, and for children it's 12 grams per day. So a commercial sports drink contains more than four times the amount of sugar the average child is recommended to consume each day.
If you or your family enjoy any kind of sports drink while exercising, before you stop by the local store for a toxic sports drink, try making your own natural version instead. It’s cheaper, easy to make and a thousand times healthier!
Here is my homemade, all-natural sports drink recipe (without artificial ingredients):
1 litre of green tea (or your favourite herbal tea)
1/2 tsp sea salt (I use Himalayan Sea Salt)
1/2 cup of your favourite natural juice (apple, orange, pineapple, etc)
1/2 tsp magnesium powder (optional)
Stevia or honey to taste
Brew tea for 5 minutes
Add sea salt
Add magnesium (if using)
Add juice and mix well
Cool and store in fridge until ready to use
Don’t have time to make your own sports drink? Try Coconut Water as an alternative
Coconut water is one of the best sources of electrolytes available and is an excellent option for refuelling your body after exercise. It has less sugar and sodium content compared to sports drinks. And the major benefits are its high levels of potassium and calcium, which are needed to help replenish and boost your energy levels after any strenuous exercise. If you’re looking for a quick and healthy alternative that you can buy from the supermarket 100% pure coconut water is an excellent choice.
So next time you feel like a sports drink, instead of sipping on a chemical-shit-storm opt for a glass of homemade, all natural sports drink instead!
Before you go.
